Erasmus Students

The Department of Economics of the University of Ioannina welcomes foreign students from all over Europe who wish to spend a semester or a year studying at Ioannina.

The city of Ioannina, with a population of approximately 100,000 is the capital of the region of Epirus and spreads around the shores of lake Pamvotis. It is located 450 km northwest of Athens, 350 km southwest of Thessaloniki and 70 km east of the port of Igoumenitsa in the Ionian Sea. In a few hours driving distance, the visitor can enjoy both, the beauty of the mountainous nature of Epirus as well as the magnificent seashores of the Ionian Sea.

The University of Ioannina started in 1964 with a single Department of Classical Studies and evolved into an independent multi-disciplinary public University in 1970. Several Departments were added during the ensuing years to form today's University with a faculty of over 400 and a student body of 10,500. The University Campus is located 5 km from the city of Ioannina. It covers 8 acres of oak forest and meadows surrounding the historic post-Byzantine Monastery of Dourouti.

The Department of Economics was founded in 1999. The department is designed for individuals who aspire to become economists with multi-disciplinary education and training that will allow them to understand the complexity of the economy and the design of the economic policy. At both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Department of Economics offers a high standard of teaching and research, in accordance with international developments in scientific methods and analysis.

 

In the context of the Erasmus Program, the Department of Economics has partnership agreements with many universities throughout Europe and offers a wide range of courses in English, specially designed for incoming Erasmus Students. These courses awards ECTS credits and therefore the learning outcome can easily be recognized by other European Universities. History

The department of Economics was founded on 1996 and the department opened for classes on the academic year 1998-1999. The department's purposes are to acquaint students with the economic aspects of modern society, to familiarize them with techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems and to develop in them an ability to exercise judgment in evaluating public policy. There is training for the general student as well as for those who plan careers as economists in civil service, private enterprise, teaching, or research.

Infrastructure

Teaching takes place in the department’s smart classrooms and application of theory occurs in our state of the art computed lab, with efficient use of up to date technologies and multimedia. Course curriculum is updated continuously in order to take into account all new scientific development and the updated demands in the labour market. Communication between the faculty members and the students create the perfect academic environment for all prospective students.

Faculty

The faculty has an active research agenda. Their areas of expertise range from pure theory to applied subjects. Many have achieved significant distinctions in their fields. This background lays the foundation for a transfer and application of knowledge that ensures the students’ access to new trends and research in Economic Theory. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge which will equip them to compete in the domestic as well as in the highly competitive international labour market.
