    The Department runs a post graduate programme in economics. The first postgraduate programme started in 2003 under the title “Economic Theory and Policy”. Since 2008, the Department has been running a new postgraduate programme entitled “Economic Analysis and Finance”. The aims of the post graduate programme are : a) to offer further specialization in economics, b) to motivate independent research and c) to offer sound background in economics and quantitative methods for those interested to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

     

    The duration of the programme is 3 semesters. The first two semesters consist of taught module lasts 6 weeks (4 hours per week). The total number of ECTS units of the taught modules is 60. The dissertation bears additional 30 ECTS units. The total number of ECTS unis is 90.

     

    The programme accepts graduates of: Dept. of economics / Business Studies, Department of Sciences (Mathematics etc) and Engineering Universities.

     

    Applicants must submit:

    • Application
    • Transcript of grades
    • Certificate of English Language
    • Certificate of Greek language (for foreign applicants)
    • Certificate issued by DOATAP (for the recognition of degrees awarded by foreign universities).

     

    Postgraduate Programme – selection criteria

    • Degree grade (min. 6/10) (25%)
    • Average grade in macroeconomic courses (15%)
    • Average grade in microeconomic courses (15%)
    • Average grade in quantitative methods courses (15%)
    • Interviews (30%)

     

    Applicants from non-economic departments are requested to sit for exams in Macreoconomics, Microeconomics and Quantitative methods (if needed).

History

The department of Economics was founded on 1996 and the department opened for classes on the academic year 1998-1999. The department's purposes are to acquaint students with the economic aspects of modern society, to familiarize them with techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems and to develop in them an ability to exercise judgment in evaluating public policy. There is training for the general student as well as for those who plan careers as economists in civil service, private enterprise, teaching, or research.

Infrastructure

Teaching takes place in the department’s smart classrooms and application of theory occurs in our state of the art computed lab, with efficient use of up to date technologies and multimedia. Course curriculum is updated continuously in order to take into account all new scientific development and the updated demands in the labour market. Communication between the faculty members and the students create the perfect academic environment for all prospective students.

Faculty

The faculty has an active research agenda. Their areas of expertise range from pure theory to applied subjects. Many have achieved significant distinctions in their fields. This background lays the foundation for a transfer and application of knowledge that ensures the students’ access to new trends and research in Economic Theory. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge which will equip them to compete in the domestic as well as in the highly competitive international labour market.
